Signs of Aging
What Is an Aging Skin?
As we age, our skin changes in many ways. Our skin becomes papery thin and loses its elasticity. Fat cells below the skin shrink, and collagen and elastin fibres start to break down. These changes lead to sagging skin, the formation of wrinkles, and a loss of that youthful glow. In addition, the production of new skin cells slows down, and the natural process of exfoliation becomes less efficient. Because of this, our dead skin cells accumulate on the skin’s surface, making it dull and dry. Exposure to UV rays can also cause premature aging by deteriorating collagen as well as increasing the risk of sun or age spots.
What Causes an Aging Skin?
The most visible sign of aging skin is wrinkles. This happens when the skin loses its elasticity due to a decrease in our body's natural production of Collagen. This protein helps to keep skin firm, bouncy, hydrated and young. Another cause of aging skin is a loss of moisture. The body produces less natural sebum as we age, leading to dry, dull skin. Additionally, Sun exposure and other day to day stressors can damage the skin and contribute to the signs of aging. Fortunately, there are several ways to combat the effects of aging skin at Dunbar Med.
